Care home visit checklist: questions to ask

Part of Organising care

Take the same questions to each home so you can compare answers fairly. Focus on your parent's preferences, staffing, visits, care planning, communication, costs and what happens if needs change.

During the visit

Ask to see shared areas and a typical room, meet staff, and notice whether people appear able to ask for help. Your impressions matter, but check claims in writing.

After the visit

Write down answers while they are fresh. Follow up on any unclear point, read inspection information and compare contract terms before deciding.

A practical checklist

  • Can the home meet the needs identified in an assessment?
  • Who is on duty overnight and how are changes communicated?
  • What are visiting arrangements and how are residents' preferences respected?
  • What is included in the fee and what costs extra?
  • What happens if care needs change or someone wants to leave?
