Support ranges from informal family help and equipment, through visiting home care and extra-care housing, to residential care homes and nursing homes that include registered nurses. The right option depends on the person's needs and wishes, and an assessment helps work it out.
Help at home
This might be family help, equipment and adaptations, a personal alarm, or visiting carers for tasks such as washing, dressing and meals.
Supported and extra-care housing
Some people move to housing with on-site support while keeping their own front door. Availability varies by area.
Residential care homes
Care homes provide accommodation and personal care around the clock.
Nursing homes
Nursing homes also have registered nurses on duty for people who need nursing care. Some homes offer both.
Getting an assessment
In England, contact adult social care at the local council to ask for a free care needs assessment. It considers what the person needs and what they want to achieve.
