You register a death with a local register office, usually after receiving the medical certificate of cause of death. The registrar gives you the documents needed for the funeral and can explain Tell Us Once.
Who can register
Usually a relative, someone present at the death, or the person arranging the funeral. The registrar will confirm who can register.
Documents
Check with your register office. They typically ask for information about the person such as their full name, date and place of birth, and last address.
Tell Us Once
Available in England, Scotland and Wales, it can notify services such as HM Revenue and Customs, the DWP and the passport office. Northern Ireland has its own arrangements through nidirect.
